National Grandparents’ Day became an national holiday in 1978 when it was proclaimed by then President Carter. Marian McQuade, from Fayette County, West Virginia, was the driving force that concluded in this official celebration. One of Marian’s motivations to establish this holiday was to remind everyone of the many lonely elderly in nursing homes who have no family visiting them. According to a statement on the official website, “she also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.”
